CHRISTMAS
READINGS AND MUSIC
lunchtime
at Chelmsford Cathedral
07.12.12
As
these successful [and free] lunchtime concerts go into their 18th
season, a Christmas miscellany for Advent.
Alan
Woods, impresario of these weekly Friday lunchtimes, read us two very
different pieces about Christmas cards, Brian Thomas dipped into A
Child's Christmas in Wales, we heard Roald Dahl's typically gruesome
take on Cinderella, and Audrey Sheard had the last reading, Hard to
Find, about the true meaning of Christmas.
The
music was just as eclectic, with Brahms and Back on the Cathedral
organ, played by Oliver Waterer. Tim Smith performed two seasonal
piano solos, and David Hylands sang When A Child Is Born, Sterndale
Bennett's amusing Carol Singers – The Waits. And he led us in
Silent Night to end the sequence.
Lunchtime
concerts resume on January 4th, when the Cathedral
welcomes back pianist Tim Smith as soloist.
